When It's Hard to Love

Jesus said, 'Love one another'; 'Love your enemy'; 'Love your neighbor'.  But loving others is harder for some than for others.  For example if you didn't have good role models for loving others when you were growing up, you might not know what love should look like (1 Corinthians 13:4-7 gives the best description you can find).  If you weren't on the receiving end of love in your formative years, you might not know how love 'feels' or why it is so important to everyone.

We can't go back and change those things that might have created barriers to our ability to love others but we can overcome them and become more loving.  Here's something that has been very helpful to me:

Psalm 90:14 says Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.  When I substitute me for us, I for we and my for our, I personalize the verse and make it my own prayer.  I am asking God to allow me the fullest experience of HIS love for me (satisfy me) so that it will spill out of my life in the form of joy and gladness every single day!

If you have missed out on love in the past, God can more than make up for it when you ask Him to.  And as He fills you with the knowledge and experience of His love for you, your capacity for loving others will grow.  Adrian Rogers said, "Whatever you are filled with is what will spill out when you are jostled."  Ask God to fill you with His love and it will spill out on the lives of others.
